The paper examines the role of moral notions of dignity and respect in the ritual practices of native cultures of Central Asia. Such cultures are often studied through the notion of traditionalism, oriented toward the reproduction of rituals by considerable monetary expenditures and based on traditional social institutions . Such practices, along with increasing mobility in the modern world, have become transnational in nature and continue to function in diasporas around the world. A special role is assigned to popular Islam as cementing ritual practices (primarily weddings, funerals and circumcision). At the same time, under the conditions of globalization, active labor migration and the strengthening of the communication channels, the economic behavior of various social groups in the Central Asian region is changing. Overspending in the context of an acute shortage of money in families leads to borrowing by the population. The issue of spending reduction has moved out of the family-kin space into the national space, when Tajikistan and Uzbekistan enacted several laws in order to reduce spending. The behavior of different social groups in organizing lavish or modest rituals is largely determined by the understanding of group and individual dignity in accordance with the position of ancestors, social status, material wealth, and religious orientation. This diversity of factors and strategies influences the effectivity of laws. At the same time, laws are important for disadvantaged groups and justify modest rituals, on the one hand; on the other hand, society from below shapes various adaptation models, which prove to be more flexible than official schemes. Notions of respect and dignity have a complex substantive content that combines both moral imperatives and reflects the class division before the establishment of Soviet power, prestige and nomenklatura statuses of Soviet times and divisions based on material wealth in the postsoviet period.

В докладе рассматривается роль духовных понятий достоинства и уважения в ритуальных практиках локальных культур центральноазиатского региона. Такие культуры нередко исследуют через понятие традиционализма, ориентированного на воспроизводство ритуалов со значительными денежными тратами и базирующихся на традиционных социальных институтах. Подобные практики с увеличением мобильности в современном мире приобретают транснациональный характер и продолжают функционировать в диаспорах по всему миру. Особая роль отводится народному исламу, как цементирующему ритуальные практики (в первую очередь свадьбы, похороны, обрезание). Вместе с тем, в условиях глобализации, модернизации экономики и всех сторон жизни, активной трудовой миграции и бытования транснациональных культур, с усилением коммуникационного вектора денежное поведение различных социальных групп в центральноазиатском регионе меняется. Чрезмерные траты в условиях острой нехватки денежных средств в семьях приводят к закредитованию населения. Тема сокращения расходов вышла из семейно-родового пространства в общегосударственное, а в Таджикистане и Узбекистане на протяжении ряда лет издаются законы, направленные на сокращение расходов. Поведение разных социальных групп при организации расточительных или скромных ритуалов во многом определяется пониманием достоинства группы и человека в соответствии с положением предков, социальным статусом, материальным достатком, религиозной ориентированностью. Такое разнообразие факторов и стратегий поведения, множества обществ влияет на слабую реализацию законов. Вместе с тем, законы важны для малоимущих групп населения и оправдывают скромные ритуалы, с одной стороны, с другой, общество снизу формирует различные адаптационные модели, которые оказываются гибче официальных схем.

The paper focuses on the attitudes toward wedding traditions of young people from Central Asia who have gone to study in Russia (Moscow). They are highly mobile and focused on successful career. Can a wedding be a point of conflict between the generations of fathers and children?

Paper long abstract:

Wedding traditions in Central Asian countries are detailed regulated and require considerable time, effort and money to observe them. Traditions are passed down from generation to generation based on a value consensus in society. What happens when consensus is not evident? Can young people be critical of wedding rituals and resist observing them?

This paper focuses on the attitudes toward wedding traditions of young people who have gone to study in Russia. Respondents are students from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan between the ages of 18 and 22, boys and girls. They are highly mobile and focused on education as the foundation of a successful career.

All of the young people have witnessed wedding ceremonies in their home country and have had their own emotional experiences with traditional weddings. Their attitudes toward wedding ceremonies are characterized by ambivalence. On the one hand, they (as insiders) know the rites in detail, are happy to talk about them, acting as qualified guides. They recognize the beauty of the ritual, appreciating its aesthetic component. On the other hand, they (as outsiders) are critical of wedding traditions, emphasizing their archaic and irrationality. The number of guests at the wedding is particularly distasteful.

The range of attitudes towards wedding rituals ranges from condescending forgiveness ("my people have so little joy, at least let them have this") to sharp rejection and protest against traditions ("I hate them," "this is complete nonsense"). The rejection is based on the fact that the respondents in the new environment feel that they are active subjects. Whereas the wedding tradition prescribes them the role of an object, on which the efforts of relatives and social environment are directed. Tradition is perceived as a subordination of their individual self to the will of the community.

Свадебные традиции в странах Центральной Азии передаются от поколения к поколению, опираясь на ценностной консенсус в обществе. Что происходит, когда консенсус не очевиден? Могут ли молодые люди критически относиться к свадебным обрядам и противиться их соблюдению?

Доклад посвящен отношению к свадьбам молодых людей, которые уехали учиться в Россию. Респонденты - студенты из Узбекистана, Казахстана и Кыргызстана в возрасте от 18 до 22 лет, парни и девушки. Их отличает высокая мобильность и нацеленность на получение образования как основу успешной карьеры.

Их отношение к традиционным свадьбам характеризуется амбивалентностью. С одной стороны, они (как инсайдеры) детально знают обряды, с радостью рассказывают о них, выполняя роль квалифицированных гидов. Они признают красоту обряда, ценят его эстетическую составляющую. С другой стороны, они (как аутсайдеры) критически оценивают свадебные традиции, подчеркивая их архаичность и нерациональность. Особенное неприятие вызывает численность гостей на свадьбе.

Диапазон отношения к свадебным обрядам варьируется от снисходительного прощения («у моего народа так мало радости, что пусть хоть это у них будет») до резкого неприятия, протеста против традиций («ненавижу», «это полный бред»). Основой неприятия выступает то, что респонденты в новой среде ощущают себя активными субъектами. Тогда как свадебная традиция предписывает им роль объекта, на который направлены усилия родственников и социального окружения. Традиция воспринимается как подчинение их индивидуального «я» воле сообщества.

Labor migration and modern housing are the factors that affect the relationship between nuclearization and family functions. The process is accompanied by changes in the economic and functional behavior of the family that is determined by nuclearization and existing infrastructure of services.

In the conditions of modern globalization, the family evolves as a social institution, which inevitably leads to changes in its structure, relationships between its members and generations. This paper focuses mainly on the phenomenon of nuclearization as one of the most important elements of structural changes to which the family is exposed in modern realities. It considers the relationship between nuclearization and certain family functions, and the extent to which changes in family structure may be responsible for shifting economic priorities.

Fieldworks conducted in different regions in Uzbekistan revealed that two circumstances have particularly intensified this process, namely labor migration and the construction of model housing, especially in rural areas.

As a result of labor migration, many families have improved their economic well-being, and the main source of family survival has shifted from the extended family to the earnings of the heads of nuclear families. Migration has provided nuclear families with a significant economic base for separation from extended families.

The collected data show that nuclearization is often accompanied by changes in the economic and functional behavior of the family. But the main reason for these changes is not only nuclearization but also the accompanying infrastructure of services, i.e. the so-called "supply". When a family gains access to a vast range of services, the nuclearization is accompanied by an increase in the "demand" for the services of such a specific market.

Thus, nuclearization and the presence of an advanced services structure lead to a shift in priorities in the allocation of the family budget. If in the extended family the emotional and cultural culmination of family life is the costly wedding cycle, budget, in the modern nuclear family we observe a deviation from these norms.

В условиях современной глобализации семья меняется как социальный институт, что неизбежно приводит к изменениям в ее структуре, отношениях между ее членами и поколениями. В данной работе мы сосредоточимся на феномене нуклеаризации как одном из важнейших элементов структурных изменений, которым подвергается семья в современных реалиях. Мы рассмотрим взаимосвязь между нуклеаризацией и некоторыми семейными функциями, а также то, в какой степени изменения в структуре семьи могут быть ответственны за смещение экономических приоритетов.

Полевые исследования показали, что два фактора особенно усилили этот процесс : трудовая миграция и строительство типового жилья, особенно в сельских местностях.

В результате трудовой миграции многие семьи улучшили свое экономическое благосостояние, и основной источник выживания семьи переместился от расширенной семьи к заработку глав нуклеарных семей. Миграция обеспечила нуклеарным семьям значительную экономическую базу для отделения от расширенных семей.

Собранные данные показывают, что нуклеаризация часто сопровождается изменениями в экономическом и функциональном поведении семьи. Но основной причиной данных изменений является не только сама нуклеаризация, но и сопутствующая ей инфраструктура услуг, т.е. "снабжение". Когда семья получает доступ к широкому спектру услуг, нуклеаризация сопровождается увеличением "спроса" на услуги такого специфического рынка.

Таким образом, нуклеаризация и наличие развитой структуры услуг приводят к смещению приоритетов в распределении семейного бюджета. Если в расширенной семье эмоциональной и культурной кульминацией семейной жизни является дорогостоящий свадебный цикл, то в современной нуклеарной семье наблюдается отклонение от этих норм.

For many years, religious personnel in mosques have been discussing the issue of ceremonial expenditure in line with the laws enacted by the Uzbek state to reduce it. Relying on surveys conducted among mullahs and worshippers we'll analyze the changes of moral perceptions toward ritual overspending.

For several years, religious personnel in mosques have been discussing the issue of ceremonial expenditure and taking a stand on the laws enacted by the Uzbek authorities to reduce such expenditure. In this presentation, we will present the results of surveys and interviews conducted with both mullahs and worshippers on the nature of the discourses that are delivered and heard in Tashkent mosques. We will focus on the influential power of the recommendations made in the mosques, but also on the transformation of moral perceptions of conspicuous spending among the faithful. We will examine whether ordinary religious practice and regular attendance at the mosque contributes to evolving norms governing the organization of life-cycle ceremonies.

В течение нескольких лет религиозный персонал мечетей обсуждает вопрос о ритуальных расходах и выступает с позицией по поводу законов, принятых узбекскими властями для сокращения таких расходов. В данной презентации мы представим результаты опросов и интервью, проведенных как с муллами, так и с верующими, о содержании дискурсов, которые проводятся и звучат в ташкентских мечетях. Мы сосредоточимся на влиятельной силе рекомендаций, данных в мечетях, а также на трансформации моральных представлений верующих о показных тратах. Мы обсудим, способствует ли обычная религиозная практика и регулярное посещение мечети изменению норм проведения торжественных ритуалов жизненного цикла.
