Paper short abstract:

During the late soviet period, spending on funeral rituals grew substantially in Kazakhstan. This paper will shed light on material strategies deployed to honour the dead and on the shaping of social hierarchies these practices led to.

During the late soviet period, from the end of the 1960’s to the 1980’s, ceremonial expenditure grew substantially in Kazakhstan and more broadly among indigenous societies of Central Asia. Spending on funeral rituals became particularly salient. In this paper, I will analyze the political and economic conditions that made possible the mobilization of a large amount of food and gifts but also workforce in order to honour the dead. Indeed, a real fashion for mausoleums spread in the Kazakh steppes at that time. How can this phenomenon be explained in a Soviet society where consumer goods were in short supply and where the expression of religious rituality was theoretically forbidden in the public sphere? In this paper, based on archival documents and oral testimonies, I will try to draw a sociological portrait of the men for whom the high funeral expenses were incurred, to understand how the communities gathered the resources necessary for the ceremonies and the construction of the mausoleums, and finally I will also articulate this phenomenon to the religious policy actually implemented at local level in Kazakhstan. The practices carried out at diverse stages of the funeral ritual question the way the death was invested as a social space for actualizing and building social hierarchies.

В позднесоветский период, с конца 1960-х до 1980-х годов, расходы на ритуальные мероприятия значительно возросли в Казахстане и в более широком смысле среди коренных народов Центральной Азии. Особенно заметными стали расходы на похоронные ритуалы. В этой презентации я проанализирую политические и экономические условия, которые сделали возможной мобилизацию большого количества продуктов питания и подарков, а также рабочей силы для того, чтобы почтить память умерших. Действительно, в то время в казахских степях распространилась настоящая мода на мавзолеи. Как можно объяснить это явление в советском обществе, где потребительские товары были в дефиците, а выражение религиозной ритуальности теоретически было запрещено в общественной сфере? В данной работе, основываясь на архивных документах и устных свидетельствах, я попытаюсь составить социологический портрет мужчин, на которых ложились большие расходы на похороны, понять, как общины собирали средства, необходимые для проведения церемоний и строительства мавзолеев, и, наконец, я также соотнесу это явление с религиозной политикой, фактически проводимой на местном уровне в Казахстане. Практики, осуществляемые на различных этапах похоронного ритуала, свидетельствуют о том, как смерть являлась социальным пространством для актуализации и построения социальных иерархий.

This presentation is devoted to the study of ritual economy in the business environment of Dushanbe and Khujand in recent times. Based on material from two studies in 2005 and 2016, this paper analyzes the participation of businessmen and their employees in rituals, the specifics of their roles in rituals, and their ritual expenses. I examined the relationship of the nature and amount of ritual expenditures to property and social status and the inverse effect of expenditures on status and influence. Material from interviews with entrepreneurs, their employees, and their family members made it possible to conclude that participation in rituals is a tool of personal and group social and property stratification, legitimizing social roles and statuses. This general situation looks different in Dushanbe and Khujand, as ritual activity reflects the differences in social organization in these cities.

Significant ritual expenses of businessmen make them the recognized leaders of kinship and fellow countrymen group. And it accumulates the resources and efforts of rank-and-file members in order to promote the most successful members, and thus the entire group. There is much less support in Khujand than in Dushanbe. Therefore, businessmen invest a lot of money in insurance for their business, but not in rituals. In general, the level of ritual expenses of Khujand businessmen is much lower than in Dushanbe. At the same time, ritual expenses almost do not go through the mosque and religious institutions, unlike in Dushanbe. The study demonstrated a complex relationship between ritual expenditures and social stratification.

Using field data from Tashkent, we will analyze the features of the development of that market and its impact on the well-being of society, in the pre-pandemic and pandemic period.

With the new leadership in Uzbekistan a process of market liberalization has begun, which has entailed structural changes in all spheres of socio-economic life of the Uzbek people, which has directly affected the ceremonial services market among others. The COVID-19 pandemic (on the global scale) had some negative impact on the expected intensive growth of business activity in the country, which has required not only adjustments in development of the ceremonial services market, but has also affected organization of ceremonial and funeral events themselves. Given that and on the basis of empirical material we have collected, this presentation will address issues revealing the achievements and problems of structural changes in the economy, from the perspective of the business environment in the sector we have investigated. In addition, it will deal with the impact of the pandemic on the activities of entrepreneurs providing ritual services. Finally, relying on field data, this paper will analyze the evolving changes in the ritual expenditures.

С приходом нового руководства в Узбекистане начался процесс либерализации рыночных отношений, повлекший за собой структурные изменения во всех сферах социально-экономической жизни узбекистанцев, которые непосредственно затронули рынок торжественных услуг, в частности. На ожидаемый интенсивный рост деловой активности в стране оказало свое негативное влияние пандемия COVID-19 (в мировом масштабе), что потребовало не только корректировки в развитии рынка торжественных услуг, но сказалась на проведении самих торжественных и похоронно-поминальных мероприятий. Учитывая это и собранного эмпирического и полевого материала на данном выступлении будут затронуты вопросы, раскрывающие достижения и проблемы структурных преобразований в экономике, с позиции деловой среды в исследуемой отрасли. Также в влияние пандемии на деятельность предпринимателей, оказывающих ритуальные услуги. На основе анализа эмпирики будут проанализированы динамичные изменения в ритуальных расходах.

Relying on a social geography approach, this paper deals with the role of ritual economy in the production of space in Central Asian cities.

Paper long abstract:

This paper focuses on the role of ritual economy in the production of space in Central Asian cities. Following a social geography approach, It analyses how the urban landscape is shaped by life-cycle rites (marriage, funerals, circumcision, jubilees), in large cities but also in medium-sized cities.

Schematically, the geography of ritual economy addresses the places where ceremonies are arranged and the places where they are celebrated. The manufacture and sale of goods purchased/exchanged during the various rituals (furniture, clothing, etc.), as well as all the services provided to people prior to the ceremonies (beauty salons, etc.), cover a space in Central Asian cities that is commensurate with the economic and symbolic investment made in these celebrations by Central Asian societies. But the most spectacular places are certainly the to'yhona, whose number has increased considerably in recent decades and whose interior and exterior design is often sumptuous.

Some of these places are partially devoted to the ritual economy, others exclusively. Their geographical distribution reveals forms of concentration, which reflect the specialization of certain districts.

This paper, relying on field surveys conducted in different cities of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, carries out landscape and cartographic analyses.

В этом докладе затрагивается роль ритуальной экономики в формирование городского пространства в Центральной Азии. В нëм, на основе подхода социальной географии, анализируется, как городской ландшафт образуется под влиянием обрядов жизненного цикла (свадьба, похороны, обрезание, юбилеи), в крупных городах, так и в городах среднего размера.

Схематично, данный подход географии ритуальной экономики заключается в наблюдении и анализу мест подготовки торжественный мероприятий и мест их проведения. Производство и продажа товаров, приобретаемых/обмениваемых во время различных ритуалов (мебель, одежда и т.д.), а также спектр услуг, предшествующих праздникам (салоны красоты и т.д.), занимают в городах Центральной Азии огромное пространство, которое соответствует с размером экономических и символических инвестиций, вложенными в эти мероприятия центральноазиатскими обществами. Но самыми впечатляющими местами, наверно, являются тойхоны. Их внутренний и внешний дизайн часто выглядит роскошным. В последние десятилетия их число значительно увеличилось

Некоторые из этих мест частично связанны с ритуальной экономикой, другие - исключительно. Их географическое распределение свидетельствует о формах концентрации и специализации определенных районов.

Данный доклад основан на полевых исследованиях, проведенных в разных городах Казахстана и Узбекистана. В нем используются как ландшафтные, так и картографические анализы.
