This workshop introduces two hands-on tools from the Translating Transformations project that help make hidden power dynamics visible. Participants will learn simple methods to communicate complex social theory on knowledge/power and inclusion in teaching, research, and transdisciplinary contexts.
Long Abstract
Addressing inequalities and injustices requires making the power structures that sustain them visible. This workshop is a follow-up to the presentation “Translating Transformations: Making power visible with ‘critical social science literacy’ tools” on Monday in P111 (1/2 - see abstract for details). However, the workshop is organized so that those who missed the presentation can still meaningfully participate. We will demonstrate two tools from our Translating Transformations project’s Open Access toolbox. The first tool - The Power of Truth - was designed to demonstrate Foucault’s concept of knowledge/power and its relation to truth. The second tool – The Power of Inclusion – was designed to assist with reflection on active vs. passive inclusion, and how this in turn affects whose voices count. Whether or not participants have previously acquired these capacities, they will gain hands-on experience with the methods and tools to apply in their own work/contexts. Both tools are grounded in a transformative active learning approach and combine short conceptual inputs with individual and small-group exercises. The workshop is suitable for anyone looking for a simple way to communicate complex social theory in teaching, research, and/or inter- and transdisciplinary spaces.
