Long Abstract:

This session aims to demystify the art of writing for policy audiences. It will provide insights into how policy is made and the influence academic research can have. It will examine how different evidence, both quantitative and qualitative, is used in the policy world; how messages 'land' with different audiences; and what is the real relationship between research and uptake. It will consider both writers and readers.

The session will be facilitated by Laure-Hélène Piron and Olly Owen from The Policy Practice, and will share the expertise of David Tumwesigye from the Uganda Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. David will explain how evidence shaped Uganda's social protection policy. Laure-Hélène has a long experience of policy-making within the UK Department for International Development, as well as think tank policy influencing, while Olly, winner of a UK ESRC research impact award for work with the Nigeria Police Force, will share tips on research uptake from an academic perspective.

The interactive session will include real-world examples, a practical exercise, and plenty of time for questions and discussion. It is particularly aimed at Global South researchers and early career academics.

If you are planning to attend, please contact the conveners or send an email to alex.scoines@thepolicypractice.com with your research and policy influencing interests and questions.
