Short Abstract

Gender and sexuality can move us together but also apart. Centering feminist, queer, and trans perspectives as both lived experiences and scholarly interventions, this workshop suggests the notion of queer convivialities to think through gender and sexuality as ways to be moved and move others.

Long Abstract

How do gender and sexuality move us? In this workshop, we aim to discuss this question by centering feminist, queer, and trans perspectives, both as lived experiences and as scholarly interventions, as ways to be moved and move others. To do this, we invite contributions that reflect on how socio-cultural and political configurations of gender and sexuality orient us in the world. How do they make us move together, toward, or away from each other? How do they prevent us from moving on or allow us to stay put?

We suggest the notion of queer convivialities as a lens to engage such questions and the ambivalences, contradictions, and exclusions they entail. We invite contributions that reflect on what convivial modes of being, living, and moving in the world can look like in different ethnographic contexts. Contributions may also explore what moves us as anthropologists working on gender and sexuality, and how trans/queer-feminist ethnography relates to visions and desires, but also refusals or failures of conviviality.
