Short Abstract:

This is a discussion of scholars who work on both Indigenous and environmental history. The primary goal is to have a productive conversation about how we teach this material to our students.

Long Abstract:

Building on a successful conversation at the 2023 American Society for Environmental History conference in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., this roundtable will bring together scholars who work at the intersection of Indigenous and environmental history to talk about how we teach these intersecting fields. Environmental history has long engaged with Indigenous history. This roundtable presents an opportunity to both reflect on the histories of how these fields have been entwined and to work together to think about where they might go in the future. The focus, though, is on students, teaching, and the classroom. We will discuss questions such as: How is environmental history Indigenous history? How do we as scholars working in these fields present this material to our students? How has this changed over time? What has been successful and productive in teaching this material? Where can and should we go with it in the future? In Boston, we had a very lively discussion, but we were a group primarily composed of U.S.-based scholars whose work and teaching engages with the Indigenous peoples of the North American continent. The World Congress of Environmental History presents a great opportunity to expand this and make it a conversation on the teaching of environmental history and Indigenous peoples from all over the globe.
