Short Abstract:

This public history panel is a monument to the memorialisation of womanhood in the West African state of Liberia.

Long Abstract:

This public history panel is a monument to the memorialisation of womanhood in the West African state of Liberia. Taking inspiration from the Ghana-centred film and research project When Women Speak, this panel proposes to address gender activism and experiences through the lens of three women writers from Liberia: Patricia Jabbeh-Wesley (poet), Hawa Jande Golakai (fiction writer), and Althea Romeo-Mark (poet). Together they provide an intergenerational and diasporic lens on (writing about) life from and with Liberia. They will discuss changes and the challenges of gender-based liberation globally, nationally, communally, and in their own Liberian homes since the 1970s and 1980s. They will also reflect on how this knowledge has informed their work and activism related to Liberia.
