Abstract:

The future of migration research: Centering African scholarship

In the ever-growing field of migration studies, research on migration in Africa and South-South migration is slowly growing, though it is still dwarfed by research with a focus on the Global North. As part of African migrations work, this roundtable wants to centre the discussion on African scholarship in migration studies, including a discussion on positionality, reciprocal research and research collaboration with Western-based scholars. Moreover, the roundtable will address some of the emergent themes in this scholarship including binary terminologies in migration discourses and how they create differential migration opportunities and experiences that are skewed against African migrants. These terminologies’ detachment from or oblivion to the history of migration in(to) Africa deserves attention as it is pertinent to the ahistorical framing of current migration discourses whether in politics, policy or academia.
