Short Abstract:

In this Lab we propose a round table to discuss issues on open access publishing in medical anthropology.

Long Abstract:

In this round table discussion we propose to explore issues around open access publishing in medical anthropology. Curated by committee members of the Medical Anthropology Theory (MAT) cooperative - our sub-discipline’s only open access journal, and currently hosted by the Edinburgh Centre for Medical Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh – presenters at the roundtable will address practical, political and theoretical issues around open access publishing. Questions to be addressed could include: In what ways does open access publishing change our methodological approaches to medical anthropological research? Is open access publishing the universal public good that it is so frequently touted to be? What are the hidden costs of open access publishing (See our recent MAT editorial for more on this: http://www.medanthrotheory.org/article/view/6205)? “Green”, “gold”, “diamond”… As categories of open access proliferate, what are the ethical and political implications of these emergent futures presented to us as researchers?
