Description
Anna and Noreen will co-host Bites of Culture, a live podcast dedicated to the exploration of food and culture. Their aim is to demonstrate how food serves as an inclusive and engaging entry point to discussions on culture and identity, making the field of anthropology more accessible to audiences beyond academia.
Bites of Culture questions taken-for-granted ideas of citizenship in Britain to re-think identity and belonging through the lens of food. In a time of national and global cultural tension, this event invites audiences to pause and reflect. Together, we will explore how food helps forge connections as people stay put or migrate, creating new traditions and identities in the process. Building on ideas from Noreen’s existing podcast Bowlful of Culture, during this event the two hosts meet three members of Edinburgh communities to discuss the critical role of food in understanding what it means to be human today. Following the session, audience members are invited to stay for an open conversation about the themes emerged, and maybe add their own stories to the mix.
Anna and Noreen are anthropologists. They will contribute valuable insights by drawing on Anna’s Italian background, and Noreen’s heritage and lived experiences as a second-generation British-Pakistani. The hosts will frame discussions that encourage both guests and audience members to actively participate. This approach will ensure that conversations are relatable, making the exploration of anthropology fun and public-facing, encouraging the audience to reflect on how travel, class, background, family and friendships shape their relationships with food.
