What's the future of grassroots networks for reproducibility and reform?.
Panel T5.8 at conference Metascience 2025.
Reproducibility networks (RNs) and the metascience community share a goal of improving research quality, yet collaboration varies by country. This session explores how RNs can support metascience and how metascience can help RNs address challenges, fostering stronger partnerships and best practices.
Long Abstract
Background: Over the last decade, many new grassroot initiatives have stimulated the uptake of responsible and transparent research practices. These initiatives include the quickly growing number of national reproducibility networks (RNs). These grassroot initiatives have often started as action-oriented movements, but there is increasing recognition that the practices they advocate and support should incorporate meta-scientific evidence as much as possible. The metascience field is expanding quickly with important research on what makes science robust. Using this work supports the activities of RNs in ensuring research quality. On the other hand, RNs provide an infrastructure (e.g. a network of universities), creating opportunities for metascience on local, national, and international scale, e.g. through supporting and contributing to metascience research projects. This creates an exciting perspective for the close collaboration between RNs and the metascience community. In practice though, we see large differences in the extent to which this is successful even across RNs with similar structures. In this session, we aim to discuss the challenges and success factors focusing on potential new partnerships to mitigate these challenges.
