Short Abstract:
Athletes are affected by various difficulties that slow down or limit their full sporting development, hence the need to evaluate young cyclists in the city of Bogota using the capabilities approach, with the aim of generating strategies to enhance individual and collective capabilities.
Long Abstract:
Extended Summary:
Research Context:
The present study focuses on the city of Bogotá, Colombia, where cycling has experienced significant growth in recent years. This boom has prompted the creation of several youth teams, such as the Kronos MTR team, which has become a benchmark for formative cycling in the city.
Objective:
The main objective of the research is to evaluate the core capabilities that are developed in young cyclists of the Kronos MTR team, using Martha Nussbaum's capabilities approach as a theoretical framework. From this evaluation, we seek to generate strategies that enhance the individual and collective capabilities of young athletes, conceiving them as "an end in itself" and not only as a means to achieve objectives of total or average well-being (Nussbaum, 2006)
Methodology:
In order to achieve the stated objective, a mixed methodology combining different data collection instruments will be used:
Questionnaires: These will be applied to young cyclists to evaluate their physical, emotional, practical, social and environmental control abilities.
Interviews: Interviews will be conducted with coaches, family members and other relevant stakeholders of the Kronos MTR team to obtain a broader perspective on the development of young athletes.
Analysis of sport performance data: Results of competitions in which the young cyclists participate will be analyzed to assess their sport development.
Analysis:
The data collected through the different instruments will be analyzed individually and collectively, using statistical analysis techniques and content analysis. This analysis is expected to identify the core capacities that are developed in young cyclists, as well as the factors that influence their development, taking into account that "sport is of vital importance in the context of developmental work, but does not guarantee the achievement of social outcomes" (Coalter, 2007)
Conclusion:
It is hoped that the research will contribute to the understanding of the impact of cycling on the integral development of young people, in line with Nussbaum's perspective on capabilities as the basis of human development. The results of the study will allow the generation of strategies to strengthen the individual and collective capabilities of young cyclists, as well as to improve public policies, sports programs and training practices that foster their integral development, "expanding the opportunities available to every human being" (Nussbaum, 2012, p. 38).
Key words: sport, human development, core capabilities, capabilities approach, Martha Nussbaum, young athletes, cycling, Bogotá.
Limitations:
It is important to mention that the research is limited to the context of the Kronos MTR team in Bogotá, so the results cannot be generalized to other teams or cities.
Contributions:
Despite the limitations, the research is expected to be a valuable contribution to the knowledge on the impact of sport on human development, specifically in the context of youth cycling, while contributing to the debate on the possibilities and limitations of the capabilities approach in the field of social development.
