Long abstract:

Africa's rapid urbanization challenges many aspects of sustainability. In this panel we will focus on urban environmental sustainability, and try to find out what African municipalities, companies and citizens do to achieve a better urban environment. Some African cities are among the global pioneers (like Cape Town, Durban and Lagos); most others are lagging far behind. We will map, compare, and challenge the urban sustainability initiatives in Africa. This panel will continue work done for the World Congress of the International Geographical Union in Beijing in 2016. A paper for this Congress can be found at https://openaccess.leidenuniv.nl/handle/1887/42108 We will discuss all aspects of urban environmental sustainability initiatives (transport, buildings, energy, green, blue, waste and lifestyles) but are not only interested in achievements, but also in the social and geographical inequality issues of African sustainable cities.
