Short Abstract
This panel focuses on the coping strategies adopted by African pastoralists to address old and new challenges and to improve their climate, social, political, economic and environmental resilience.
Long Abstract
Managing more than 300 million cows, 350 million sheep and 400 million goats, pastoralism in Africa is a key economic activity for many countries and for a significant part of the continent's population. Traditionally, pastoralists have faced many challenges, ranging from access to pastures and water, access to markets, disease control, social and political marginalization, access to education & health, agro-pastoral conflicts, insecurity and livestock rustling, among other issues. Adding to this list, population growth, political unrest and climate change bring new challenges. Our panel invites papers focusing on how African pastoralists are adopting new coping strategies to address old and new challenges, and to improve their climate, social, political, economic and environmental resilience.
