Short Abstract
Building on the pilot experience of a teaching innovation project (PID), we propose a roundtable discussion to share, reflect on, and debate the ontologies, epistemologies, and methodologies of teaching and learning experiences that provide an Afro-centered approach to African Studies.
Long Abstract
The following roundtable aims to create a space for exchange, reflection, and self-criticism regarding the ontology, epistemologies, and methodologies to bring African Studies closer to an Afro-centered approach. While not limited to these, the topics for discussion include questions such as:
- How can Africa be redefined from an object of study to a subject of study within European university classrooms?
- At the institutional level, what measures can be implemented within universities to promote an Afro-centered approach to learning?
- Is it truly possible to achieve an Afro-centered approach in European educational institutions?
- Can different assessment methods encourage students to take an interest in Africa? Why/how?
- In what ways can students contribute to the deconstruction of Eurocentric approaches in area studies?
- How do educational policies influence African studies? And what about the foreign policy of the EU or its member states?
- What challenges do we still need to overcome in the teaching of African studies?
- What alliances are needed to approach African studies from a holistic perspective?
- Is it possible to incorporate African studies into the academic curriculum without framing them as an area of study? Why? How?
- What is the current relevance of African studies at European universities?
The roundtable welcomes contributions in English, Portuguese, and French.
