Accepted Paper:

Cuban deportations in Fernando Poo in the nineteenth century: rethinking the encounter of African-American criolities from Hispanic and British colonies in Africa
Isabela de Aranzadi (Grupo MUSYCA - Universidad Complutense de Madrid)

Paper short abstract:

The presence of Cubans in Fernando Po has given a cultural legacy in Equatorial Guinea. Hundreds of ñáñigos (Abakuá), were deported in 1896 and 1897. This involves the encounter of two criolities, one British, one Hispanic (Fernandino Creoles are descendants of the Krio Diaspora of Sierra Leone).

Paper long abstract:

The presence of Cubans in Fernando Po in the nineteenth century has remained almost invisible, although its legacy is still reflected in the ritual culture and in the musical culture of the Creoles in Equatorial Guinea. Numerous ships with hundreds of ñáñigos (members of Abakuá, a Cuban secret society), were deported out of Havana, reaching Cadiz from where they were sent to Ceuta, the Canary Islands, Chafarinas and Fernando Po.

We should therefore ponder about the high number of Cubans in the city that is now Malabo, from the deportations of 1896 and 1897, which were not previously studied. This involves the encounter of two criolities, one British, one Hispanic (Fernandino Creoles of Fernando Poo are descendants of the Krio Diaspora of Sierra Leone). In the process of creolization, this group of "British subjects", would find in these cultural manifestations, a reflection of African preserved memory, through a complex network of paths in the Atlantic, initiated from abolitionist ideas.

KEYWORDS: Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, deportations, Abakuá, Krio, Fernandino Creole, Annobonese.
