The presence of Spanish in Western Sahara represents one chapter of the Colonial history. During the Protectorate, Spanish was the only official language, took root in the main cities, and nowadays continues to be one of the official languages of the Saharan refugee camps and the preferred for the people.

The presence of Spanish in Western Sahara represents one chapter of their Colonial history. During the Protectorate, Spanish was the only official language, existing in a diglossic relationship with vernacular Arabic, the mother tongue of the people of the Sahara. Contrary to predictions, Spanish took root in the main cities, and nowadays continues to be one of the official languages of the Saharan refugee camps
and the preferred for the people, who do not identify themselves with the Francophone Magreb.
