Short Abstract
Futures of Science 2040: A Futures Literacy Laboratory explores how science, research, and education might evolve in the next decades. Participants use futures thinking to question assumptions, imagine alternative futures, and reflect on the role of science in shaping tomorrow’s world
Description
Science is one of the most powerful forces shaping human futures - yet its own directions, values, and methods are undergoing rapid transformation. Artificial intelligence, post-disciplinary research, citizen science, and planetary challenges are reshaping what we consider scientific knowledge and innovation. This laboratory invites participants to explore these emerging dynamics through the lens of futures literacy - the capability to imagine, use, and reflect on the future to better understand the present.
Grounded in UNESCO’s Futures Literacy framework, Futures of Science 2040 offers an experiential learning process combining strategic foresight, speculative design, and collective reflection. Rather than forecasting what science will look like in 2040, participants engage in anticipation: questioning assumptions, identifying drivers of change, and co-creating alternative futures of science, research, and education.
Through collaborative mapping and narrative prototyping, the lab explores such questions as:
What kinds of knowledge and skills will matter in 2040?
How will science interact with ethics, society, and technology?
The laboratory is designed for educators, researchers, students, and professionals interested in connecting scientific inquiry with futures thinking. It emphasizes imagination, critical dialogue, and creative experimentation as tools for rethinking the role of science in a complex, uncertain world.
By the end of the session, participants will have developed new anticipatory insights, creative scenarios, and a deeper understanding of how science both shapes and is shaped by our visions of the future. Futures of Science 2040 is not about predicting the next decades - it is about learning to see, question, and design the future of science itself.
