Short Abstract:

This workshop facilitates developing STS experiential learning activities with fellow participants. We frame this experience through our NSF CREATE/STS edited book project modeled after a community cookbook that brings together critical STS pedagogy ‘recipes’ for use in undergraduate education.

Long Abstract:

In this workshop, the CREATE/STS Editorial Collective will introduce the NSF-Funded CREATE/STS project and associated book project: An STS Teachbook: Recipes from our Science and Technology Studies Communities for Critical Pedagogies in Undergraduate Education. The Collective will share the CFP for contributions to this book, which will be modeled after a community cookbook. Participants will have an opportunity to share ideas, develop recipes, workshop recipes, and develop their submissions for the book project. More specifically, workshop participants will be provided several examples proposed to be included in the Teachbook as a touchstone. Then they will be invited to work closely with members of the Collective to craft recipes for possible inclusion in the book. We expect participants to have one-on-one or two-on-one advisory sessions where they can share their own teaching experiences and desires to bring active learning to STS. The Collective hopes that these meetings will be a fruitful, symmetrical exchange of ideas and will not assume anyone has privileged knowledge about how to teach STS to undergraduates. Toward the end of the time, participants will have the opportunity to share their drafts with the entire group. Beyond generating interest for the Teachbook, regardless of whether participants submit a recipe, we see this workshop as an opportunity to innovate and spread active learning and critical pedagogies in STS undergraduate curriculum.

Practical Requirements: We will need a room that holds approximately 25 people (16 participants and 8 members of the editorial collective). We need several round tables with chairs to hold our pedagogical exchange sessions with participants.
