Paper long abstract

In recent years, the spread of online communication has increased the importance of non-face-to-face dialogue skills in business settings. In response, our university’s "Business Japanese" course provides opportunities to consider the language knowledge and social norms expected of new professionals in Japan, as well as differences in dialogic attitudes toward online and intercultural communication. This report aims to observe and analyse learners’ dialogic attitudes using video recordings of online interview activities conducted as part of course assignments, with the goal of identifying the factors that influence these attitudes.

Firstly, in this context, a dialogic attitude refers to a proactive approach during interviews that goes beyond mere one-way question-and-answer exchanges. It includes students’ efforts to deepen their questions and respond appropriately to unexpected ones as they progress through the interview. In analysing the recordings, the focus was on students’ reactions to respondents’ answers and their responses to questions, aiming to explore the circumstances under which a dialogic attitude is fostered, as well as to observe factors that may hinder such interaction.

Based on this research and observations, this report discusses the necessary pre-instructions to promote better dialogic attitudes during online interviews and explores activities to achieve more natural dialogue, offering implications for future educational practices.
