Paper long abstract
This study employed an ethnographic approach to explore how competence emerges in Japanese workplaces where foreigners are employed. It examined how the participants made use of various resources available in the workplace to co-construct interaction and build new relationships. Focusing on the everyday practice of “taking photos together,” this presentation highlights how such a seemingly simple act reveals the dynamics of collaboration and inclusion.
As its theoretical framework, the study draws on metrolingualism (Pennycook A, ＆ Otsuji E, 2015). Traditional perspectives have tended to regard “language” and “linguistic competence” as possessions of individuals—abilities inherently owned by and internal to the person (Hall 1995). In contrast, metrolingualism conceptualizes language and competence not as given entities, but as phenomena that emerge through participants’ interactional engagement with linguistic, material, and relational resources configured within a particular setting. Following this perspective, the present study focuses on how “language” and “competence” arise in interaction and provides a detailed description of workplace exchanges. This reconceptualization challenges individualistic models of competence dominant in applied linguistics.
To further analyse the use of digital devices in photo-taking practices, this study incorporates the concept of miniaturized mobilities (Elliott A, ＆Urry J, 2010) .
Based on analyses of field notes, video-recorded data, and interview data, the findings reveal that workplace members collaboratively mobilize the functions of digital devices such as smartphones, along with other spatial and social resources, to construct relationships. Moreover, the act of taking photos and the social norms surrounding it serve as additional resources for negotiating identity and belonging, particularly for foreign employees.
This study contributes to the rethinking of competence, not as an individual attribute but as an emergent, interactional, and socially situated practice. It further deepens the understanding of competence within the framework of multilingualism and multiculturalism.

| Abstract in Japanese (if needed): | 外国出身メンバーとともに働く職場における「能力」を探る ―共に写真を撮るという実践を手掛かりに― 大平幸（四国大学） キーワード：メトロリンガリズム、共に写真を撮るという行為、小型化されたモビリティーズ、 アイデンティティ交渉、エスノグラフィー 本研究はエスノグラフィーの手法を用い、外国出身メンバーが働く日本の職場において、いかにその場に存在する多様なリソースを活用しながら相互行為を成立させ、新たな関係性を形成していくのかを明らかにする。本発表では、特に職場のメンバーが「共に写真を撮る」という実践に注目して分析を行った結果を発表を行う。 本研究の理論的枠組みとして、「メトロリンガリズム」（Pennycook & Otsuji 2015）を用いる。伝統的な能力観において、「ことば」や「ことばの能力」は個人の所有物であり、個人に本質的に備わるものという見方がなされてきた（Hall 1995）。メトロリンガリズムは、「ことば」や「能力」が所与のものではなく、言語資源、物質資源、人との相互関係から成る場において、参加者たちがその場に配置された資源を駆使して相互言語活動する中から生まれるものとしている。本研究においても、この見方にならい、相互行為において立ち上がる「ことば」や「能力」に注目し、職場でのやりとりを記述していく。 さらに、スマホなどのデジタルデバイスを用いた写真撮影でのやりとりを分析するため、「小型化されたモビリティーズ（エリオット& アーリ 2016）」を援用する。 フィールドノート、録画データ、インタビューデータを対象とした分析の結果、職場で働く人たちが、協働的に、スマホというデジタルデバイスの機能や、その場に配置されたリソースをフルに活用し、さらには写真を撮るという行為やその行為にまつわる社会規範そのものをリソースとして駆使しつつ、関係性の構築を行っていることが明らかになった。また、このやりとりは、外国出身のメンバーが職場において「在る」ことを可能にするための、アイデンティティの交渉でもあった。 本研究の意義は、この分析を通して、職場における「能力」の従来的な見方の転換を促すことにある。また、このことは、複言語複文化主義における「能力観」をさらに深めるものであると考える。 |
