Short Abstract

This paper proposes a methodological framework for designing Croatian-based comparative learning materials for Japanese and Korean language, integrating mother-tongue-based learning, selective contrastive analysis, and digital linguistic resources.

Long Abstract

This paper proposes a methodological framework for designing a learner-centered materials for Japanese and Korean language study using Croatian as the primary mediating language. Grounded in mother-tongue-based learning (MTBL) and selective comparative analysis, the framework addresses the lack of available materials that move beyond English-based mediation for under-represented language communities such as Croatian.

Japanese and Korean are typologically distant from Croatian, yet systematic comparison mediated through the learner’s mother tongue can function as an effective cognitive scaffold. The proposed framework outlines methodological steps for identifying linguistically salient features across the two languages, such as certain grammatical structures, honorific expressions, and usage-based vocabulary patterns and mapping them onto Croatian in a way that is relevant for supporting comprehension and retention.

A central component of the framework is the use of digital linguistic resources, such as corpora and digital dictionaries, to inform the selection and structuring of learning materials. Particular attention is given to the design of Croatian–Japanese–Korean learner-centered platform and dictionary with contextually grounded and relevant examples. The framework further proposes evaluation criteria for learning materials, including linguistic transparency, comparative relevance, learner accessibility, usage-based authenticity, structural consistency, and scalability.

Rather than focusing on classroom instruction, this paper treats learning materials as a research object, positioning materials design as a methodological and analytical process. The framework is intended to be adaptable and replicable, providing a foundation for future empirical studies and digital resource development.

By foregrounding Croatian-based materials design, this study contributes to discussions in digital linguistics, learner-centered lexicography, and East Asian language studies, offering a structured methodological approach to the creation of innovative learning resources for Japanese and Korean in European contexts.
