Short Abstract:

The OJAE team has developed an assessment method designated as OJAE Oral Japanese Assessment Europe, based on the plurilingual and -cultural ideas of the CEFR. In the present panel the team offers a Workshop on the methodology as a paradigm-change based on its "Communication Observations".

Long Abstract:

In achieving and maintaining world peace, in the global society of the present era there is an acute need for foreign language instructors to nurture citizens to support communication among humans. Communication can be expressed via languages, i.e., via dialogue. What are then "dialogues" (Dia=through, logo=Words)? Even though half a century has passed since the idea of the "Communicative Approaches" was first born, in the JFL-Education-World, concluding discussions over the concepts of communication or the daily practices of classroom-lessons have yet to be finalized.

In response to this current urgent issue, the OJAE team has developed the assessment method designated as OJAE Oral Japanese Assessment Europe, based on the plurilingual and -cultural ideas of the CEFR Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (Council of Europe 2001). It assesses the communication competence of two test-takers who communicate orally, think together, and thus collaborate in order to strengthen their abilities. Our team has thus committed to develop a methodology for assessing as objectively and fairly as possible and has offered it to the AJE-educators.

In the present panel the team offers a Workshop with the following steps: Introduction: Each team-member introduces him/herself shortly by mentioning "Why the involvement?"; Part I: Each participant "judges/assesses" one B2-film of OJAE-Testing, using his/her "own" scale; Part II: "Calibration-Session": The floor discusses the results of the disclosed judgment/assessment, reflecting on the judgment-scale of his/her own hitherto "unconscious" benchmarks as well as on those "exemplified" by the team; Part III: Feedback-Session: How can the result of the OJAE-Assessment and "Communication- Observations" as a compass contribute for further ways to both L1- and L2-Speakers of Japanese? Conclusion & Announcement: the OJAE workshops to be scheduled in the fall of 2020, and an on-line training program (focusing on A2) from 2021 onwards.
