Short Abstract:
This panel examines the dynamics and impacts of Chinese backed space infrastructure projects in Africa.
Long Abstract:
The internationalisation of Chinese space infrastructure and technology in Africa represents a significant yet under-examined dimension of Global China's expanding footprint across the continent. China's approach to space development cooperation presents a unique case study of South-South cooperation that merits critical examination. Like the broader Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese space infrastructure engagement blurs commercial and geopolitical imperatives while operating through multiple forms of capital and diverse actors. This engagement occurs within a complex political economy where African states face distinct challenges: limited financial resources, policy gaps, marginal participation in global space governance, and technical capacity constraints. The panel therefore invites contributions that broadly explore the dynamics and impacts of Chinese backed space infrastructure projects in Africa. Among other issue, this panel is interested in contributions focusing on the:
•Intersections between Chinese space infrastructure projects and development in Africa
•Multiple temporalities of space infrastructure development, from immediate project implementation to long-term capacity building in Africa
•Diverse voices and agencies in localising Chinese space technology, including technical experts, policymakers, and end-users, and
•Policy mobilities and knowledge transfer in the space sector
