Format:
Roundtable

Short Abstract:

This roundtable panel brings together editors of journals of development studies to discuss practical strategies to implement principles of decolonization in journal publishing.

Long Abstract:

Debates about decolonization are now central to international development studies teaching and research. Journals of international development play important roles in global systems of knowledge production about international development and are thus important actors in processes of academic decolonization. At the same time, academic journals represent just one group of actors and face many constraints that can limit their capacity to put principles of decolonization into practice.

This roundtable will bring together editors of journals of development studies to discuss the challenges of decolonizing their respective journals and the strategies they are pursuing to address those challenges. Discussion questions will include:

• How does your journal understand decolonization?

• Does your journal have a specific strategy to promote decolonization?

• What are the challenges your journal faces in putting the principles of decolonization into practice as an academic journal?

• What strategies have you developed to put the principles of decolonization into practice?

The convenor of the panel is Prof. John Cameron (Dalhousie University, Canada), a co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Development Studies. The current editors of other journals of development studies will be invited directly to participate and the open call will specifically encourage past-editors.
