Abstract:

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into journalism has brought about profound transformations in recent years, revolutionizing traditional practices and enhancing operational efficiency. Automated tools now enable journalists to sift through vast datasets, uncover trends, and even generate news articles with unprecedented speed and accuracy. However, alongside these advancements, Al's widespread adoption raises significant ethical considerations. Hence, this study aimed to explore ethical usage of AI in media. According to Hagendorff (2020), current advances in research, development and application of artificial intelligence systems have yielded a far-reaching discourse on AI ethics. In consequence, a number of ethics guidelines have been released in recent years. To explore ethics of usage of AI in media in this research a mixed method approach was used. It consists of surveys, questionnaires and content analysis. In order to choose characters and participants researchers used convenience and judgmental sampling.

As a result we found out that a lot of media in Kazakhstan use Artificial Intelligence tools in their works to edit texts, create images, and transcribe audios. But most of them don’t have any ethical guidelines that will help journalists to use it and minimize harms from AI. Also with help of the surveys with experts we created an ethical code that may help journalists and editors when they work with AI. Surveys helped to understand possible harms and threats of AI in media that have to be considered in the creation of the code.

To conclude, even though AI have a lot of positive benefits that may help to optimize media’s work, there still may be pitfalls such as biases, monotony of content. To ensure that these problems will not affect journalism – editorials, governments and IT-specialists need to step up and take actions to regulate the use of AI, such as creating rules for journalists.
