Long Abstract:

This roundtable addresses the nomadic camp in history, and provides a companion to the two proposed panels on the Mongol Empire (The Mongols and their neighbors in West and Central Asia; Gender, Politics, Marriage and Children in the Mongol Empire). It would ideally would be scheduled so that conference participants can attend all three events, if possible. In the roundtable, participants draw on their expertise in the nomadic camp as an institution, the activities that took place within it, the relationship of gender to the daily workings of the camp, and management of the camp and its seasonal migrations, among other topics. The times and places addressed by participants include the Mongol Empire, the successor state of the Golden Horde, the Timurid and related camps of the 16th-17th centuries, and life in a late 20th-century camp as a point of comparison.
