Accepted Paper:

Not Just Family Qurans: Unarchived documents of Central Asia
Michael Hancock-Parmer (Ferrum College)

Paper long abstract:

This paper considers the commonplace practice of individual families preserving texts, notebooks, pamphlets, and family trees in the predominantly Muslim areas of the former Soviet Union, both now and in the past. Through a close reading of one such preserved document from Taraz, Kazakhstan, this paper attempts a few generalizations about the potential for historians of the region to find a wealth of materials still outside the grasp and gaze of the state.
