Short Abstract:

Future-making: sensorial notes through time is an experimental Lab that explores future-making through sensorial devices of expression. Participants will engage with future selves through sound, tactile, visual, movement etc. interactions and reflect on future-making through group discussion.

Long Abstract:

In this lab, participants will initiate an interaction with the(ir) future (selves) or any chosen other by creating multimodal compositions through one or multiple sensory modes (audio, movement, tactile, video, olfactory etc.). The lab convenors will propose overarching themes (relationships, city living, work, health, etc.) and participants will choose a mode of sensory engagement (for example, recording on smartphones, pen and paper, oral descriptions, poetry, movement, sensory walks etc.) to imagine possible futures. These outputs of participants' 'voices', i.e. any sensorial output generated in the exercise, will form the object of reflection in a group discussion.

The lab will consist of a short introduction about sensorial modes of engaging with future and description of the exercise, followed by the sensory engagement exercise. Lab convenors will then facilitate a discussion and introduce concepts and methods from existing research with the aim of bringing to fruition the concepts and sensory engagements emerging in the exercise.

Requirements: This lab will involve 10 to 16 participants. Participants will need to use their own smartphones to record audio/video; free recording software could be downloaded, or the default recording software of any smart phone could be used. Other materials, such as pens, paper etc. will be provided.

Advance preparation: participants will be emailed before the lab with preparatory guidance, such as ensuring they are familiar with how their smartphone's recording apps work, etc.
