Short Abstract:

This workshop is facilitated by the Edinburgh Cicle on the Promotion of African Languages (https://ecpal.home.blog/). It brings together a number of presentations from all over the continent, discussing language planning, design and policy. In the first session, the focus will be on problems with current policy approaches and the possibilities and limitations of the fashionable ‘translanguaging’ paradigm. The second session discusses national examples from Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Senegal (the Casamance area). The last session looks at new directions, featuring examples from the Amazigh language and Nigeria and looking at the broader framework. The workshop is planned to be interactive, allowing time for discussion and debate. All presentations have a discussant and at the end of the workshop, a panel discussion will explore the main learnings from the workshop and discuss ways forward. Participants are encouraged to stay for the whole workshop.
