My objective in attending this workshop is to refine the ability to discern tourist representations and to identify the elements that are often omitted from depictions of landscapes and urban scenes, elements that can call into question the authenticity of such representations.
During my research on traditional music performance on Swiss television, I have repeatedly encountered images that are commonly associated with tourism. My empirical findings indicate that Volksmusik bands are intentionally permitted to perform in scenic landscapes or in the presence of imposing mountainous backgrounds. This suggests that the editors of folklore programs were cognisant of the significance of these staged images, both for the local population and for Switzerland's international tourism image. In order to stage the “typical” images of Switzerland, the program makers were also inspired by postcards, among other things.
By participating in the workshop "Let's get lost! Unwriting Aberdeen postcards" I hope to make the editorial processes of that time tangible. My objective is to refine the ability to discern tourist representations and to identify the elements that are often omitted from depictions of landscapes and urban scenes, elements that can call into question the authenticity of such representations.
