Contribution short abstract:

The workshop contribution presents the first steps of a participatory, sonic ethnography tracing the emotional aspects of belonging, memories and desires of mothers and daughters with mobile biographies.

Contribution long abstract:

The research foregrounds the affective 'soundscapes' of belonging of mothers and daughters with mobile biographies in Europe, whose voices are seldom heard in the public sphere of countries that have witnessed important immigration flows since the 1960s, like Switzerland and Germany.

The fragmented stories collected through ‘Oral Histories and Futures’ interviews (Hall and Barron 2021) are complemented by an experimental collage of soundscapes developed with the research participants. I will present some of the initial recordings and discuss the potential and limits of participatory methodologies as decolonial (teaching) practices. The research is part of the broader project “Inherited Futures? Objects, Time, Knowledge” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

I’m extending the connotation of ‘evocative objects’ (Turkle 2007) beyond materiality to encompass ‘sound objects’ (Steintrager and Chow 2019) and the sonic memories of participants. The interactive sound mapping of symbolic places is meant to enhance the sensory dimension and the ethnography’s collaborative, multimodal nature.
