The story focuses on life and work of Polish photographer Kris Krzysztof Marchlak who recreates Renaissance painting traditions to design images of Polish LGBT persons.
Project long description
The film was shot between 2023 and 2025 as a part of my ethnographic research project, concerning creative documentary filmmaking as a tool for exploring contemporary art practices.
The main character of the film, Kris Marchlak, born in 1987, is a photographer and painter whose portraits feature images of Polish LGBT persons. Based both in Milano and Cracow, the artist takes inspiration from the work of early Renaissance and Mannerist Italian painters, active between 15th and 16th century, such as Perugino, Botticelli and Bronzino. The documentary focuses specifically on his recreation of the iconography of Saint Sebastian through the medium of artistic photography.
The documentary co-directed by me and W. Jankowski premiered in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cracow (MOCAK) in April 2025 and it is on view until September 2025.
