Batuque is an African-Brazilian religion characteristic of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The paper, of anthropological bias, want to establish some of the most important aspects of batuque, especially the worldview of its members, very different from the Christian-Western worldview.

Paper long abstract:

Batuque is an African-Brazilian religion characteristic of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. The first temples were probably founded in the mid-1800s, existing, today, 30 thousand temples, approximately. Practically, all the initiates are very poor African descent inhabiting the outskirts of larger cities. On the phenomenon of possession, the deities (orishas) are invoked through songs in Jeje-Nago languages and drums to possess his humans iniciates, manifesting through their bodies and minds.

The work, of anthropological bias, is the result of over 20 years of field research on this religion. The goal is to establish some of the most important aspects of batuque, especially the worldview of its members, very different from the Christian-Western worldview.
