Accepted Paper:

You don’t stand a chance, take it! The role of accounting practices in making migrants as burdens
Johan Sandström (Luleå University of Technology) Mikaela Herbert (Malmö University) Stig Westerdahl (Malmö University) Amanda Curry (Luleå University of Technology)

Long abstract:

Migration is a topic in the margins of accounting research. Drawing on literature viewing accounting as calculative practices and on accounting in everyday life, together with multi-sited empirical material on the newly arrived forced migrants in Sweden, the aim of this paper is to highlight and conceptualize the role of accounting practices in constructing migrants as self-sufficient, or as burdens to society. We illustrate (i) accounting practices producing official statistics, (ii) accounting practices embedded at local levels, and (iii) accounting practices enacted by refugees that make migrants as burdens. We find how accounting practices make visible a norm of a successful and integrated migrant, yet make invisible the many migrants meeting this norm, and paradoxically produce an image of migrants as burdens.

Keywords: accounting, calculative practices, migration, refugees, Sweden.
