Kazuyo Yamada (Shiga University)

Paper short abstract:

The subject of my presentation is to explain the living conditions of young women, focusing on their employment, money matters and happiness. I will discuss their quality of life in three aspects, and young women's perception of happiness.

Paper long abstract:

Our study aims to conduct a gender analysis of the living conditions of young women in Japan in order to uncover their hidden poverty. However, women included within their households are classified as 'dependents' and are often overlooked, regardless of the reality and context of their inclusion.

The subject of my presentation is to explain the living conditions of young women, focusing on their employment, money matters and happiness. I will discuss their quality of life in three aspects, and how the young people recognize their own happiness.

In 2014, our research group started a web survey on the living and working conditions of young women in Japan, and conducted a follow-up survey in 2016. We analyzed responses from both males and females (15-34 years old) who have high school or lower educational qualifications.

I will analyse the relation between their current economic situation, self-estimation of degree of happiness, life satisfaction and self-esteem, categorizing responses into two or three groups; women with their partner, women living with parent(s) and women living by themselves. Showing the results, I would like to discuss young women's perception of happiness and their quality of life.
