Paper short abstract

Girls face persistent barriers to education in crisis-affected regions. This study examines social, economic, and political obstacles, analyzes successful programs, and explores how leadership and policy can improve girls’ access, resilience, and equality in education.

Paper long abstract

Evidence shows that girls and women face persistent barriers to accessing quality education, particularly in low- and middle-income countries affected by social, economic, and political instability. Despite international commitments and initiatives to promote gender equality in education, progress has been slow, especially in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, where limited improvements have been recorded over the last decade. This study examines the multiple factors preventing girls from accessing education and identifies successful interventions that have reduced barriers to access, participation, and retention.

Research Questions:

What social, cultural, economic, and political factors impede girls’ access to education in crisis-affected areas?

Which community, institutional, or policy interventions have improved girls’ access and participation?

How does leadership and governance influence educational opportunities for girls during crises?

Purpose:

The study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of barriers to girls’ education and to highlight lessons from successful programs that promote gender equity, resilience, and community agency.

Methodology:

A mixed-methods approach is employed, including:

Literature Review: Analysis of reports and studies from UNESCO, UNICEF, World Bank, and other relevant sources.

Case Studies: Comparative examination of educational programs in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East.

Primary Data Collection: Semi-structured interviews with participants, including local educators, NGO staff, community leaders, and girls engaged in formal and non-formal education.

Keywords:

Girls’ Education; Gender Equality; Access to Education; Crisis Contexts; Community Leadership; Educational Policy; Resilience.
