Paper long abstract:
In recent times, Nigeria has been faced with high rates of socioeconomic and security challenges, contributing to increasing mental health issues, including substance abuse and addictions. Nigeria’s healthcare indicators rank among the lowest in Africa, with a mere 0.02 psychologists and social welfare officers, 0.09 psychiatrists, and four psychiatric nurses per 100,000 patients. This deficit, coupled with inadequate funding of healthcare services and poor infrastructure, has hindered access to mental healthcare services, increasing the burden on healthcare workers and exacerbating adverse mental health outcomes. The challenges and impacts of the unmet treatment needs of individuals with mental health issues in Nigeria are reaching more among the female and rural dweller populations. This proposed study aims to review and synthesise existing literature on the challenges faced by individuals with mental health and substance use disorders in Nigeria, focusing on the disparities in access to care. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Rapid Reviews (PRISMA-RR) guidelines shall be followed in selecting the studies for this rapid review. An extensive search shall be conducted on electronic databases such as APAPsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, CINAHL, and MEDLINE to identify studies that fit the selection criteria. Data to be extracted for analysis shall include the study aim, sample, research design, instruments, and outcomes. The results will be presented narratively, supplemented by tables and figures to aid in data visualization when appropriate. The implications of the findings shall be discussed, and recommendations shall be made accordingly.
